Abstract

Background: Microplastic pollution is a global issue that has the potential to endanger health. Tea, a popular beverage in Palembang, can be a source of exposure, especially since tea bags are reported to release microplastic particles when brewed. This research is important given the high consumption of tea and the limited studies related to this issue in Palembang. Objective: This study aims to describe the abundance and characteristics of microplastics based on shape and color in tea bags and loose tea sold in Palembang City in 2025. Methods: This study was conducted in Palembang City in 2025 using a quantitative descriptive design. The research sample was obtained through total sampling, consisting of 31 tea brands, including 16 tea bag brands and 15 loose-leaf tea brands. Microplastic analysis was conducted microscopically through a filtration process, followed by observation using a light microscope for identification, counting the number and abundance of microplastics, and determining their shape and color. Results: All tea bag samples (100%) were detected to contain microplastics with an abundance of 10-120 particles/L (median 35), dominated by black fibers. In loose-leaf tea, only 5 out of 15 samples tested positive for microplastics, with a concentration of 10–40 particles/L (median 0), predominantly consisting of black fibers. In general,
microplastic contamination was higher and more widespread in tea bags compared to loose-leaf tea. Conclusion: Tea bags sold in Palembang are significantly contaminated with microplastics, predominantly black fibers, which pose a potential health risk. Meanwhile, loose leaf tea shows lower levels of contamination.
