Abstract
Background : Low Birth Weight (LBW) refers to infants born weighing less than 2,500 grams regardless of gestational age. This condition is one of the main causes of perinatal mortality and infant morbidity in Indonesia. Infants with low birth weight are at higher risk of growth and developmental disorders, infectious diseases, and even non-communicable diseases in adulthood. Factors such as poor maternal health, low socioeconomic status, and inadequate Antenatal Care (ANC) visits contribute to the high incidence of LBW in Indonesia, including in Palembang City. Objective : This study aimed to identify the risk factors associated with the incidence of low birth weight in the working area of Plaju Public Health Center, Palembang City, in 2025, including maternal health condition, family socioeconomic status, frequency of ANC visits, maternal age, and maternal nutritional status during pregnancy. Methods : This research employed a quantitative approach with a cross- sectional design. The population consisted of all mothers who gave birth in the working area of Plaju Public Health Center, while 92 respondents were selected through purposive sampling based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Primary data were collected through interviews using questionnaires, and secondary data were obtained from medical records. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analysis with the Chi-Square test at a 95% confidence level (α=0.05). Results : The results showed that most respondents (75%) gave birth to infants with low birth weight. Statistical analysis revealed significant relationships between maternal health, socioeconomic status, and ANC visit frequency with the incidence of low birth weight. Conclusion : Maternal health, socioeconomic status, and the frequency of ANC visits were significantly associated with the Incidence of low birth weight in the Plaju Public Health Center area. The study emphasizes the importance of improving ANC services, enhancing maternal health education, and providing social and economic support for low-income families to reduce the prevalence of LBW.
