Abstract

Laboratorium Parasitologi Poltekkes Kemenkes Palembang.

Background: Intestinal protozoan infection is still a significant health problem,
especially in areas with poor sanitation such as Indonesia. Primary school children
are a group that is vulnerable to exposure to these infections due to suboptimal
personal hygiene habits, such as not washing hands, not cutting nails, and using
unclean water sources. Objective: To determine the relationship between personal
hygiene and the presence of intestinal protozoa in the feces of children of SD Negeri
77 Palembang in 2025. Research Methods: This study used an analytic
observational design with a cross-sectional approach. A sample of 44 children was
taken randomly from the total student population. Data were obtained through
interviews using a checklist and fecal examination using the direct microscopic
method at the Parasitology Laboratory of the Polytechnic of the Ministry of Health
Palembang. Results: There were 14 children (31.8%) positive for Entamoeba
histolytica and 17 children (38.6%) positive for Blastocystis hominis, while no
Giardia lamblia infection was found. There was a significant association between
hand washing and nail trimming habits with Blastocystis hominis infection
(p<0.05), but not significant for Entamoeba histolytica. Water source showed no
significant association with the presence of intestinal protozoa. Conclusion:
Personal hygiene, especially handwashing and nail trimming, influenced
Blastocystis hominis infection. Hygiene education and improved sanitation in the
school environment need to be improved to prevent intestinal protozoan infections
in elementary school children.
