Abstract

Background: Sepsis is a life-threatening condition, especially in infants, and
early detection is crucial to reduce mortality. C-Reactive Protein (CRP) is a
commonly used biomarker for detecting sepsis. Objective: To determine the profile
of CRP levels as a biomarker in infants suspected of sepsis at Siti Khadijah Islamic
Hospital, Palembang, in 2025. Methods: This was a descriptive study with a
cross-sectional approach conducted in March 2025. The study sample consisted
of whole blood specimens from 30 infants suspected of sepsis, selected using
purposive sampling. CRP levels were measured using the Fluorescence
ImmunoAssay (FIA) method. Results: Positive CRP levels were found in 63.3% of
samples, with the following statistical distribution: median CRP level of 10 mg/L,
minimum value of 1 mg/L, maximum value of 200 mg/L, and an interquartile range
of 39 mg/L. Positive CRP levels were observed in 30% of male infants and 33.3%
of female infants. Positive CRP was detected in 63.3% of infants, while no positive
CRP was found in neonates. Among infants with normal body weight, 46.7%
showed positive CRP, compared to 16.7% in those with abnormal body weight.
Conclusion: CRP levels can be used as a sensitive biomarker for detecting sepsis
in infants. Suggestion: Clinicians are advised to continue CRP testing as a
biomarker to support the diagnosis of sepsis in infants.
