Abstract

Desa
Petanggan RT 001 Kecamatan Belitang Mulya Kabupaten OKU Timur memiliki

Background: Onychomycosis is a common fungal infection of the nails,
particularly affecting individuals working in moist environments such as rice
farmers. RT 001, Petanggan Village, Belitang Mulya Sub-district, OKU Timur
Regency is predominantly inhabited by rice farmers who often work without
personal protective equipment (PPE) and practice poor hygiene, putting them at
high risk for fungal infections. Objective: This study aims to describe the
presence of fungal onychomycosis in the toenails of rice farmers in the study
area and to identify influencing factors such as age, gender, personal hygiene,

years of work, and use of PPE. Methods: A descriptive study with a cross-
sectional approach was conducted. A total of 52 rice farmers were selected

through total sampling. Laboratory examinations included culturing nail samples
on Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA) followed by Lactophenol Cotton Blue
(LPCB) staining for fungal identification. Results: Of the 52 toenail samples
examined, 37 (71.2%) tested positive for onychomycosis. The most commonly
identified fungal species were Aspergillus niger (59.6%), Aspergillus fumigatus
(9.6%), and Trichophyton rubrum (1.9%). The factors most associated with
onychomycosis were non-productive age, poor personal hygiene, and lack of
PPE use. Conclusion: The prevalence of fungal onychomycosis among rice
farmers in RT 001, Petanggan Village, is considerably high, with most infections
caused by non-dermatophyte fungi. Health education and preventive efforts are
necessary to promote better personal hygiene and PPE usage.
