Abstract

Abstrak
Latar Belakang: Kebersihan tangan merupakan langkah penting dalam mencegah penularan penyakit, terutama saat air bersih sulit diakses, sehingga hand sanitizer menjadi alternatif praktis. Risiko iritasi dari hand sanitizer berbasis alkohol mendorong penggunaan bahan alami seperti minyak atsiri jeruk nipis (Citrus aurantifolia) yang memiliki aktivitas antibakteri. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengoptimasi kombinasi Carbopol 940 dan HPMC sebagai gelling agent dalam formulasi hand sanitizer gel minyak atsiri jeruk nipis menggunakan metode Simplex Lattice Design (SLD). Metode: Penelitian menggunakan metode eksperimental dengan 5 formula awal serta formula optimum melalui Design Expert 13.0 menghasilkan 40 run formula kombinasi Carbopol 940 & HPMC. Evaluasi meliputi organoleptis, homogenitas, pH, viskositas, daya sebar, sineresis/swelling, dan uji iritasi kulit(30 responden), dan cycling test 12 hari. Formula optimum diverifikasi dengan One sample t-test antara nilai prediksi dan nilai aktual. Hasil: Hasil penelitian menunjukkan formula optimum diperoleh pada konsentrasi Carbopol 940 1,25% dan HPMC 0,75%, dengan nilai desirability 1,000. Setelah cycling test, seluruh parameter fisik memenuhi persyaratan. Uji One sample t-test menunjukkan perbedaan signifikan pada pH dan viskositas, sedangkan pada daya sebar tidak menunjukkan perbedaan signifikan. Tidak ada responden yang mengalami iritasi kulit selama pengujian. Kesimpulan: Minyak atsiri jeruk nipis dapaat diformulasikan menjadi Hand sanitizer gel yang stabil dan tidak mengiritasi kulit, dengan formula terbaik Carbopol 940 1,25% & HPMC 0,75%. Abstract
Background: Hand hygiene is a crucial measure for preventing disease transmission, particularly when access to clean water is limited, making hand sanitizer a practical alternative. Concerns regarding irritation associated with alcohol-based sanitizers have prompted the use of natural ingredients, such as key lime Citrus aurantifolia essential oil, which possesses antibacterial properties. This study aimed to optimize the combination of Carbopol 940 and HPMC as gelling agents in a key lime essential oil hand sanitizer gel formulation using the Simplex Lattice Design (SLD) Methods: An experimental approach was employed, involving five initial formulas and the determination of an optimum formula via Design Expert 13.0 software, resulting in 40 experimental runs combining Carbopol 940 and HPMC. Evaluations covered organoleptic properties, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, spreadability, syneresis/swelling, a skin irritation test (involving 30 respondents), and a 12-day cycling test. The optimum formula was verified by comparing predicted and actual values using a one-sample t-test. Results: The optimum formula was achieved with 1.25% Carbopol 940 and 0.75% HPMC, yielding a desirability score of 1.000. Following the cycling test, all parameters met the required standards. The One sample t-test revealed significant differences in pH and viscosity, whereas spreadability showed no significant difference; no respondents experienced skin irritation. Conclusion: Key lime essential oil can be formulated into a stable, non-irritating hand sanitizer gel, with the best formula consisting of 1.25% Carbopol 940 and 0.75% HPMC.
