Abstract

ABSTRACT
Background: The paradigm shift in 21st-century education requires graduates to possess not only technical competencies but also pharmaceutical communication skills. Interactive learning methods, such as role-play, are implemented to bridge the gap between classroom theory and communication practices in pharmaceutical services. This study aimed to analyze the perceptions of Diploma III Pharmacy students in Palembang toward the implementation of role-play in improving pharmaceutical communication skills and to identify the supporting and inhibiting factors.
Methods: This study employed a non-experimental descriptive design. Data were collected from March to May 2026 using a structured questionnaire distributed through Google Forms. The sample consisted of 122 final-year (third-year) active Diploma III Pharmacy students from three higher education institutions in Palembang (Poltekkes Kemenkes Palembang, STIFI Bhakti Pertiwi, and Universitas Kader Bangsa), selected using proportionate simple random sampling. The data were analyzed using univariate analysis.
Results: The study showed that the majority of students had a very positive perception of role-play practice, reaching 98.4% (120 respondents). Ninety-seven percent (119 respondents) agreed that there were strong supporting factors, primarily influenced by clear lecture instructions, constructive feedback, and clinical case scenarios relevant to real-life situations. On the other hand, 60.6% (74 respondents) stated that they still faced inhibiting factors, with the main obstacles being limited time allocated for lecture sessions and psychological barriers such as awkwardness, nervousness, or embarrassment when conducting simulations in public.
Conclusion: Pharmacy Diploma (D3) students in Palembang demonstrated a highly positive perception of the role-play method in enhancing pharmaceutical communication skills. Optimized time allocation and continuous role-play practice are recommended to support students' readiness for professional practice.
