Abstract
Background: Sodium and potassium are important electrolytes used in monitoring critically ill patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Although both the Blood Gas Analyzer (BGA) and Nova 5 Electrolyte Analyzer (NEA) employ the Ion Selective Electrode (ISE) method, differences in specimen types may lead to variations in measurement results. Objective: To analyze the differences in sodium and potassium measurement results obtained using the BGA and NEA in ICU patients at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital, Palembang. Methods: This analytical observational study employed a cross-sectional design involving 156 ICU patient samples. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, normality testing, the Mann–Whitney test, and Spearman correlation analysis. Results: The mean sodium and potassium levels measured using the BGA were 132.085 mmol/L and 3.762 mmol/L, respectively, while those measured using the NEA were 138.123 mmol/L and 4.128 mmol/L. Both instruments met laboratory quality requirements. The Mann–Whitney test showed significant differences in sodium and potassium levels between the two instruments (p < 0.001). Spearman correlation analysis demonstrated significant positive correlations, with a moderate correlation for sodium (r = 0.553) and a strong correlation for potassium (r = 0.754). Conclusion: Statistically significant differences were observed in sodium and potassium measurement results between the Blood Gas Analyzer and the Nova 5 Electrolyte Analyzer. Nevertheless, both instruments met laboratory quality standards and demonstrated significant positive correlations.
