Abstract

Background: Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the nails that can be caused by dermatophyte and non-dermatophyte fungi. Military personnel are at high risk of developing fungal nail infections due to prolonged use of closed footwear and socks, which increases foot moisture and creates favorable conditions for fungal growth. However, data regarding the presence of non-dermatophyte fungi in the toenails of Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) personnel in Lahat Regency remain limited. Objective: To determine the profile of non-dermatophyte fungi identified in the toenails of TNI personnel in Lahat Regency in 2026 based on the frequency of sock replacement, nail trimming, and foot washing. Methods: This study employed a descriptive observational design with a cross-sectional approach. The samples consisted of 52 toenail clippings collected from Indonesian Army personnel at Infantry Battalion 894 Prayatna Bumi, Lahat Regency, selected using a simple random sampling technique. Fungal identification was performed macroscopically using Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA) medium and microscopically using Lactophenol Cotton Blue (LPCB) staining. Results: All samples (100%) showed the presence of non-dermatophyte fungi. The fungal species identified were Aspergillus sp. in 47 samples (90.4%), Candida albicans .sp in 8 samples (15.4%), Rhizopus sp. in 3 samples (5.8%), and Penicillium .sp. in 1 sample (1.9%). A total of 34 respondents (65.4%) changed their socks more than once daily, 41 respondents (78.8%) trimmed their nails less frequently than once per week, and 51 respondents (98.1%) washed their feet more than once daily. Conclusion: All examined toenail samples from TNI personnel demonstrated the growth of non-dermatophyte fungi, with Aspergillus sp. being the predominant species. Non-dermatophyte fungi were detected across all respondent groups regardless of the personal hygiene practices investigated. Keywords: non-dermatophyte fungi, onychomycosis, toenails, TNI personnel, Aspergillus sp.
