Abstract
Background : Urinary tract infections (UTIs) in pregnant women are often caused by asymptomatic bacteriuria, which can increase the bacterial count in urine. One of the risk factors influencing this condition is poor personal hygiene. Objective : To determine the relationship between personal hygiene, including the habits of holding urination, cleaning the genital area, and changing underwear, and the bacterial count in the urine of pregnant women at Bhayangkara Hospital (Moh. Hasan), Palembang. Method : This study was an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional approach involving 40 pregnant women selected using the accidental sampling technique. Personal hygiene data were collected using a checklist, and urine bacterial counts were examined using the Total Plate Count (TPC) method. Data were analyzed using Fisher’s Exact Test with a significance level of α = 0.05. Results : Fisher’s Exact Test as a correction to the Chi-Square test showed significant relationships between the habit of holding urination and urine bacterial count (p = 0.000), genital cleaning habits and urine bacterial count (p = 0.000), and underwear-changing habits and urine bacterial count (p = 0.002). The proportion of respondents with poor personal hygiene was 30.0% for holding urination, 15.0% for genital cleaning, and 10.0% for changing underwear. Conclusion : Among pregnant women, there were significant relationships between the habits of holding urination, cleaning the genital area, and changing underwear and urine bacterial count.
